In the last few years, adoption of service learning in higher educational institutions has emerged as a modern teaching and learning strategy. This study is aimed to offer a systematic literature review of service learning implementation in higher education. There is a lack of research on the role of service learning in higher education sector. Moreover, a comprehensive systematic literature review of service learning in higher education is also overlooked in previous studies. Therefore, this study covers an in-depth systematic literature review, which reflects the utilisation approach and outcomes of service learning in higher education. By employing a rigorous exploratory approach, this study offers four major findings: (1) Acceptance and use of service learning in different academic disciplines, which covers a detailed discussion of up to what extent service learning pedagogy practice exists in each discipline. (2) Emerging issues regarding the integration of service learning in different academic disciplines. (3) Comparative analysis of previous service learning frameworks, which includes theoretical foundation, main findings and limitations of each framework. (4) Potential benefits of service learning for all participants. Service learning presents diverse benefits for all stakeholders; we identified the list of potential outcomes in the light of emerging service learning literature. These findings show that service learning is frequently employed in some academic disciplines, i.e. medical and nursing sciences; business and economics; computer science and information system; social studies; teacher education; linguistic and environmental disciplines. Moreover, comparison of previous service learning frameworks revealed that most of them are subject-oriented, specifically focused on institutionalising and practical aspects.

Service-Learning and soft skills in higher education: a systematic literature review
The study presents a systematic literature review on Service-Learning (SL) and soft skills in higher education. The findings are presented according to three macro-areas: the first explores the reasons for universities to support SL in the development of students’ soft skills by analysing the theoretical frameworks and definitions used; the second area investigates the SL contexts and application models, the impact scale, the quality standards and the main challenges for the actors involved; finally, the third area explores the current state of the art of the research reporting on the methods and procedures as well as any findings and relevant challenges. This study provides insights on how SL reduces the gap between significant dichotomies in higher education.

Over the last two decades, there has been a growing emphasis on the transformation of higher education within Europe. The promotion of active and democratic citizenship through formal higher education is a primary concern. Service-learning (SL) has proven to be a powerful didactic methodology for achieving these ideals. The objective of this paper is to highlight some reflections that permeate SL european experiences, published in the European Observatory of Service-Learning in Higher Education, between January 2020 and September 2021. The counting and percentages of the valued attitudes of SL experiences were collected to explore the guiding philosophy, historical roots, purposes, and underpinning features of SL, contextual factors affecting the practice of SL in the partner institutions and countries, and future challenges and opportunities. Conclusions focus on SL growth and mainstreaming; SL as a core strategic pillar for developing deeper community-higher education partnerships...
Service-learning has expanded unprecedentedly during the last few decades. Despite this, there are many issues remain to be resolved. One such long standing issue is assessment of service-learning. Although currently many attempts have been made to assess its impact from different quarters at school levels in different parts of the world, in the field of higher education, the nature, quality and applicability of these assessments are questioned for being incomplete or less reliable due to many shortcomings affiliated with the practice of service-learning. Hence, this paper critically reviews the assessment practices, their importance, nature and types in the field of service-learning in higher education. The paper also discusses some of the challenges and possibilities faced by service-learning practitioners for using different assessment sources and procedures for assessing service-learning. Finally, the paper concludes with an emphasis on the need of using different assessment techniques in service-learning as it will be easier to answer the current assessment debates in the field of service-learning.

This chapter presents the experience of the Faculty of Economics and Business of the Universidad de Chile implementing Service Learning as part of Methodology. First, it is described the process of development and then the institutionalization of the methodology and the various emphasis provided by academics. Second, the results of a questionnaire designed to assess motivation, development of generic competencies, social commitment, and students' satisfaction with the methodology are presented.
Service-learning in higher education has gained increasing atten-tion in recent years, but at most universities it remains an activity that is largely peripheral to the dominant concerns of the institution. Service learning has generally been defined as coursework that places under-graduates in community-service activities and relates those activities to academic content. In principle, service-learning courses engage students in activities that involve service of some sort to the neighboring commu-nity and provide the occasion to reflect on their participation in those activities, thus connecting service to classroom instruction. In this way, service learning both extends learning beyond the classroom and brings the real world into the classroom. In practice, however, because of the manner in which service-learning programs have been established at many universities, primarily from higher administrative units, the tendency has been for service-learning programs to become marginalize...

Given the existence of inequality gaps in Latin America and a growing need of students in social issues, many institutions have seen as convenient the development of a pedagogical methodology based on service-learning as an effective alternative to these needs. This study aims to identify the impacts of service-learning programs on the training of university students. The methodology is composed of a bibliographic review of articles published on the impact of service-learning on university students. The research is specific and critical, the procedure followed was: select articles, identify relevance, synthesize information, group according to similarity and identify variables or factors associated with the study of the topic, thus selecting 30 articles related to the research objective, finally the information was organized in a matrix, then those with similar inquiries and conclusions were selected and grouped. The analysis allows us to conclude that service-learning produces posi...

Both the Greeks and the Roman excelled in the glyptic art, including the engraving of minuscule images and texts on small semi-precious stones. These engraved gems served many different functions, from signet- and seal-rings used for official documents to decorative jewelry, worn on rings and necklaces. In the modern study of such gems, one particular subcategory is that of “magical gems.” One special feature of these gems is the recurrence of images of numerous Egyptian and Greco-Roman gods, of mythological figures such as the Phoenix-bird or of the ouroboros, of animals, and of newly-created deities and various hybrid creatures.

International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education
ISSN : 1467-6370
Article publication date: 12 July 2024
This study aims to delve into the evolution, trends and implications of scientific production related to service learning (SL) and community engagement for sustainability in higher education institutions (HEIs). Because HEIs play a crucial role in achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs), experiential learning approaches are needed to actively involve students in sustainable development.
Design/methodology/approach
In total, 869 publications from Web of Science and Scopus databases were analysed using a bibliometric approach that included performance analysis and science mapping. Subsequently, a systematic literature review was conducted on 118 publications, focusing on their contribution to SDGs and alignment with United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s fields of expertise.
The findings reveal two significant trends: a substantial shift from curriculum development (2000–2010) to education for sustainable development (2011–2022), and the effectiveness of experiential learning teaching approaches, such as the integration of SL with community engagement and the use of innovative research methods in promoting the acquisition of sustainable development competencies. Additionally, community-based research, participatory action research and capacity development emerged as the primary topics.
Research limitations/implications
While this research is based on publications from two prominent databases, it may not include significant studies published in other databases.
Practical implications
These findings suggest that stakeholders should incorporate experiential learning activities and innovative research approaches to enhance education in, for and from sustainability.
Originality/value
This study offers a fresh perspective on the intellectual framework of experiential learning teaching approaches concerning sustainability in HEIs.
