Communication and Leadership are instruments of coordination, cooperation and decision making, and as such, they are vital to address organisational, societal, and global challenges. In order to understand, explain and develop skills for handling the fundamental changes in societal and organisational conditions caused by the fourth industrial revolution and by the contemporary challenges confronting the world, a holistic academic approach is required. This PhD programme is therefore interdisciplinary.

The aim is to study private and public organisations and their members as well as the interaction and interdependencies of business, society, and government from both theoretical and empirical perspectives.

The programme is directed towards qualified candidates who want to conduct high-level research and develop advanced knowledge in the disciplines of Communication and Leadership. The knowledge developed throughout the PhD programme may be applied in future careers in knowledge-intensive national or international organisations and in academia.

Learning Outcomes

The learning outcomes describe the knowledge, skills and the general competence that the candidate is expected to have achieved upon completion of the study programme, as a result of the learning acquired throughout the course.

  • can evaluate the expediency and application of different methods, quantitative or qualitative, in communication and leadership research
  • can contribute to the development of new knowledge, theories, methods, interpretations and forms of documentation in communication and leadership in a way that is relevant to understand, explain and address  contemporary societal and organisational phenomena
  • can formulate problems, plan and carry out research on contemporary societal and organisational phenomena through the lens of communication and leadership
  • can carry out interdisciplinary communication and leadership research of a high international standard
  • can handle academically complex issues related to communication and leadership and challenge established knowledge and practice so as to address contemporary societal and organisational phenomena using an interdisciplinary approach

General competence

  • can identify new relevant ethical issues pertaining to the research and practice of communication and leadership and carry out his/her research with scholarly integrity
  • can manage complex assignments and projects that require the mobilisation and integration of knowledge within communication, leadership and related disciplines
  • can communicate his/her research to an academic audience through scientific publications and conference presentations and disseminate it to a broader audience such as policy makers and organisational managers
  • can participate in debates in the disciplines of communication and leadership in international forums that discuss how to understand, explain and address contemporary societal and organisational phenomena
  • can assess the need for, initiate and practice innovation within communication and leadership so as to augment existing knowledge and methods in a way that helps policy makers and organisations address contemporary societal and organisational phenomena

PhD Scholarship – Department of Communication and Culture

Norway BI Norwegian Business School

The Department of Communication and Culture at the Norwegian Business School is pleased to announce two four-year PhD positions. We welcome applications from candidates with a strong background in business studies or the social sciences, and a specific interest in doing research on communication.  Depending on their specific interests accepted candidates will enroll in one of the following Ph.D. specializations: ‘Leadership and Organisation’, ‘Strategy and Entrepreneurship’, or ‘Marketing’. The four-year program at BI is designed for talented students who wish to pursue an international career within academia and who can contribute to the international arena with their research and publications.

The Department of Communication and Culture, where the candidate will be based, is currently home to about 52 faculty. The Department is highly international in its faculty composition as well as its ongoing research and industry collaborations. The department hosts research groups within Internet and Society, Corporate Communication, Creative Industries and Education. Ongoing research in the department is for instance concerned with online organizing and communities, the roles of communication technologies in shaping digital work and work culture, social legitimacy of technological transformations, the role of the arts in the digital transformation, the structural changes of the creative industries, and innovation in education management. We are looking for candidates who want to contribute to one of these research streams, or more broadly to the field of communication research. 

The members of the department regularly publish on such issues in the field’s top journals, including among others New Media & Society, Information, Communication & Society, Journal of Management Information Systems, Technology in Society, Science and Engineering Ethics, Big Data & Society, the Information Society, Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology (JASIST), Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, Human Relations, Journal of Management Studies, Business Ethics Quarterly, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Arts Management, Law, and Society, Computers in Human Behavior, Telematics and Informatics, and the International Journal of Information Management.

Eligible applicants must have completed a Master of Science degree with thesis work, research masters/M.Phil. degree, or a comparable degree relevant for research in communication science by the early autumn of 2023, with a grade point average of B or higher. Final year Master of Science students are also encouraged to apply. An MBA degree does not fulfill the requirements for admission. Accepted applicants will be offered close supervision by experienced scholars and follow-up by the other scholars at the department.

The four-year scholarship currently pays NOK 523.000,- annually (this amount will be increased after 2022 salary adjustments). The position gives automatic access to BI’s pension scheme. The scholarships require 25% of the teaching responsibilities of a full-time tenured position. Ph.D. candidates will have their place of work at BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo, Norway.

  • A project proposal (5-10 pages including topic, proposed method, schedule) and a tentative list of courses
  • Letters of recommendations from relevant employers/tutors providing evidence of your skills as a researcher (a minimum of 2 letters) or the names, titles and institon they work. As they may forward their letters to  [email protected]  by the application deadline.
  • A complete list of all publications and/or other documented relevant activities
  • Signed verificaton document Template to be found  here
  • Certificates from previously completed courses at the doctoral level, if requesting approval of these for the Ph.D. programme at BI Norwegian Business School (see last section of § 3.1.1 in our Ph.D. Re-gulations)

Furthermore, note that any documents forwarded after the application deadline will not be considered. Exceptions will only be made for students who are completing their master’s degree in 2023 and do not have a final certificate when applying. Please note that you will not be able to revise your application once it has been submitted.
