AI-generated Abstract

This work addresses common challenges faced by graduate students and researchers in conducting literature searches and managing references efficiently. By outlining effective search strategies, including the use of keyword identification and various alert services, it provides a framework for reducing search time and optimizing the publication process. The initiative aims to enhance researchers' ability to navigate available tools and boost citation rates for their papers.

In today’s scientific society, Science is one of the most popular and referred journals that have an impact factor of 33.611 according to journal citation reports of 2014. In this study a scientometric analysis of the research articles published in Science from 2006-2015 has been made based on the citation data available in the Web of Science. A brief study on the type of published items by Science has been made and publications under article section have been found highest. From 2006 to 2015 Science published 25987 items that contained 8045 (30.96%) items under article section. The influence of the research articles to the overhaul journal’s impact factor was calculated based on the immediacy index comparison of research articles and overall journal items for each year from 2006-2015. The average authorship of the research papers has seen an increasing trend and the researches published in Science are highly collaborative (degree of collaboration always ≥0.96). From cited references study, it was found that each year Science generates an average of 10% self citations from the outgoing citations through its research articles. After a Bradford’s distribution study on the cited references, it was found that the core group of cited journal by Science contains 15 journals that shares 24.91% of outgoing citations. Evaluation of subject area of core 15 journals reveals that research papers from “Biochemistry, Genetics & Molecular biology” get most citations from Science. USA is the top contributing country with 71.43% of article contribution and University of California System is the top contributing organization with 15.88% of article contribution between 2006-2015.

The prestige of any journal is considered by how many abstracting and indexing services cover that journal. It has been observed in the last few years that authors have started searching for indexed journals to publish their articles. Probably this is happening because it has become a mandatory requirement for further promotions of teaching faculty (Dhammi and Ul Haq 2016), having to Indexed journals, they are usually considered to be of higher scientific quality as compared to non-indexed journals. This, however, has become a trend, keeping aside the essence of being indexed. Beginning in the mid 20th century, indexing sought to claim its popularity, over the years the concept of citation indexing grew to a larger context among different writers and authors. The study seeks to underline the concept of citation indexing in explaining the process that is required for research scholars to attain an idea of how it has evolved to be a source of importance in research publication.

A citation index is a bibliographic database that provides citation links between documents. The first modern citation index was suggested by information scientist Eugene Garfield in 1955 and created by him in 1964, and it represents an important innovation to knowledge organization and information retrieval. This article describes citation indexes in general, considering the modern citation indexes, including Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, Microsoft Academic, Crossref, Dimensions and some special citation indexes and predecessors to the modern citation index like Shepard’s Citations. We present comparative studies of the major ones and survey theoretical problems related to the role of citation indexes as subject access points, recognizing the implications to knowledge organization and information retrieval. Finally, studies on citation behavior are presented and the influence of citation indexes on knowledge organization, information retrieval and the scientific information ecosystem is recognized.

We submit newly developed citation impact indicators based not on arithmetic averages of citations but on percentile ranks. Citation distributions areas a rule-highly skewed and should not be arithmetically averaged. With percentile ranks, the citation of each paper is rated in terms of its percentile in the citation distribution. The percentile ranks approach allows for the formulation of a more abstract indicator scheme that can be used to organize and/or schematize different impact indicators according to three degrees of freedom: the selection of the reference sets, the evaluation criteria, and the choice of whether or not to define the publication sets as independent. Bibliometric data of seven principal investigators (PIs) of the Academic Medical Center of the University of Amsterdam is used as an exemplary data set. We demonstrate that the proposed indicators [R(6), R(100), R(6,k), R(100,k)] are an improvement of averages-based indicators because one can account for the shape of the distributions of citations over papers.

Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to relate the problems identified about scholarly journal publishing in Malaysia to establish motivation for the system development; to describe the design of MyCite, a Malaysian citation indexing system and to highlight the added value to journals and articles indexed through the generation of bibliometrics performance reports. Design/methodology/approach -The system uses a rapid prototyping method, modeling the functions identified in the Web of Science databases and Scopus, as the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia requires the system to be ready within a year, mainly to help improve the quality, accessibility and performance of Malaysian scholarly journals. Findings -The paper shows the relational tables and module functions in MyCite; highlights the value added to bibliographic data through performance reports of authors, journals, institutions, country and bibliographical control of Malaysian journals; and provides performance tables of top authors, rank list of 75 journals by yearly impact factor, and other bibliometric indices.

Traditional research managements were mostly driven by expert opinions (i.e. bottomup up decision making system). In the last ten years, however, citation metrics provided by search systems for scholarly literature, like Web of Knowledge (Thomson Reuters), Scopus (Elsevier) and Google Scholar gain interest in boardrooms of research laboratories and universities. This bibliometric analysis can develop to serve research managements and science and technology strategy building. This paper provides and discusses some examples of such citation metrics and methodology of identifying and ranking research fronts. As a result,100 hottest world research fronts are introduced. The corresponding situation is reported for Vietnam and proposals for changes in research managements, policies and decision making are suggested for Vietnam and other developing countries.
